Does Cyber Insurance Require an MSP? Start With Your Actual Policy Questions

Do not assume every cyber insurance policy requires a managed service provider. Start with the application, quote conditions, or renewal questions your broker or insurer supplies. A provider can help implement and maintain technical controls, but an MSP contract alone does not tell an insurer how your systems are configured.

Read the actual requirement

Find out whether the insurer is asking for a particular control, an ongoing service, or supporting evidence. Travelers’ guidance on certain Corvus cyber and technology E&O quotes lists examples such as MFA, endpoint detection and response, backups, email security, encryption, and remote access controls. That example is useful context; it does not establish the requirements of every insurer or policy.

Translate questions into work your office can verify

For each question, record the systems it covers, the person responsible, the current position, and any remaining work. If a control is only partly deployed, distinguish the covered systems from the gaps. Ask your provider to explain how the proposed work changes that position instead of simply naming products.

Prepare an evidence list

  • The exact question or quote condition.
  • The devices, accounts, or services within its scope.
  • The settings or records that demonstrate the current control.
  • Any exclusions, limitations, or unresolved gaps.
  • The person who will maintain it after the renewal.

Do not upload that evidence to a public website form. Agree on an appropriate private process with your broker, insurer, and IT provider.

Where an MSP can help

Ongoing endpoint care, update follow-up, backup checks, access administration, and documentation can make controls easier to maintain. In a professional office, that may be more useful than a one-time exercise just before renewal. Ask for a scope that explains responsibilities and support arrangements.
